I feel there is one tip that everyone is missing. It’s so easily overlooked because the idea has been ingrained into our heads that weight loss is about restriction. It’s as if you must go through a period of suffering to achieve a greater good.
After all, you gained all that weight being fast and free with your eating, so you must do the exact opposite if you wish to achieve a fit body. Right?
You must endure the hunger pains. You must forgo eating your “fun” foods. You must torture yourself with healthful food you do not like. Right?
No, no, and no 10 more times. Which leads me to the single tip that has the potential to make a dramatic impact to your health and fitness lifestyle. What is this tip?
– Food is not your enemy.
Why Do We Treat It Like It Is?
Many of us fear food and don’t even know it. These people understand and have personally experienced the emotional and physical harm it has caused them over a lifetime.
Weight gain, body image problems, self-hatred have all helped to shape the way we think about food. When it’s finally time to lose weight, we launch an all out attack on food.
We punish ourselves by drastically cutting our calories. As a result, we experience what seems like everlasting hunger, and an endless fixation on our next meal. We begin to live our lives meal to meal. Food is our new timekeeper.
It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way
Food is nutrition. It keeps us healthy and brings us pleasure. It nourishes the mind, body, and soul. It heals us when we are sick, and it makes us stronger when we push our fitness limits.
If we ever want to achieve lasting health and fitness we’re going to have to change the way we think. It’s time to make a new friend in your life, and his name is Food.
That doesn’t mean to use him to mask unhappiness, anger, or other negative emotions. It means to welcome him into your life so that he can do what he was born to do – make you healthy, happy, and in control.
What Does This Mean For You?
Never is this enemy mindset towards food more apparent than when you’re attempting to lose weight. We wage a war on food that attacks it from every angle – slashing calories to absurdly low levels, over restricting the types of foods we eat, and forcing ourselves to consume foods we don’t enjoy.
Instead, you should be viewing weight loss as a side effect of being healthy. That means you need to eat with the goal of being healthy in mind.
For that to happen you must eat sufficient calories. You must consume nutrient dense foods. And you must do this while also enjoying what you eat.
Making 20% of your calories come from “fun” foods will ensure you still get plenty of nutrition. Not only that, but it will help to instill long term healthy eating patterns.
The lack of restriction helps end the binge eating and other disordered eating habits. The influx of nutrients improves your health, and the added calories boosts your energy levels, performance, and mental well-being.
Food is not your enemy. It is the best friend you have. No other thing has as big of an influence on the way you feel, look, and think as food does.
To truly succeed at your health and fitness goals you are going to have to get along with food. But once you do, you will begin to realize the true synergy of your friendship.
